The new UK flagship location near Glasgow for Ceridian, one of the world’s leading providers of payroll and HR outsourcing services, was officially opened last week and created 300 jobs in the City. The HR Shared Service Centre is the largest facility of its type anywhere within the UK.
The new, purpose-built, hi-tech office in Braehead, near Glasgow, represents a total investment of over £16m, which was supported by a substantial contribution from the Scottish Government through Scottish Enterprise. The HR Shared Serviced Centre is currently occupied by over 300 Ceridian staff and has room to accommodate around 600. The company expects to create up to 300 new jobs over the next five years.
Proservartner Point of View: Ostensibly, it may seem strange for a shared service centre to be set up in Glasgow. However, there are two key reasons why Ceridian have chosen this location:
- The grants available from the Scottish Enterprise: It recent times it is no secret that to make Scotland more competitive with other locations from a cost perspective, the Scottish Enterprise provide some substantial grants. It is also notable that once there, multinational organisations such as Barclays this week, have committed to stay for the medium term
- Ceridian’s Operating Model: The offshore HR outsourcing market has struggled in recent times, with Convergys selling off their HR capability after a $600 million loss, HP selling off their Excellerate HRO capability and some high profile outsourcing deals with leading provider failing. Ceridian have offshore capability, but largely operate utilising an onshore operating model in the UK, hence their search was for a UK location that can provide an onshore HR and Payroll solution.
